Description:
This bronze coin was minted in Seleukeia ad Calycadnum, an ancient city in Cilicia, during the 1st century BC. Located near the Calycadnus River (modern Göksu River), Seleukeia was an important Hellenistic and Roman trading center.
Obverse: Laureate head of Apollo facing right, with EY inscribed before and behind. Apollo, the Greek god of prophecy, music, and light, was a popular figure on ancient coinage.
Reverse: Forepart of a horse facing right, with ΣEΛEYKEΩN TΩN ΠΡOΣ TΩI KAΛYKAΔNΩI inscribed around. Above the horse is AΘ, with ΛA beneath. The horse motif may symbolize military power or aristocratic status.
